Google’s New iPhone App Makes Me Want One

Since the iPhone arrived in the United States almost everyone has been enamored with it.  I say almost everyone because I know at least one person who did not want one, me.  I wanted to see, play with, and hold the phone, but I have not really wanted one.  Oh sure, it looks cool, but the lack of a keypad has annoyed me.  I’m an avid texter, and I’ve tried typing on the iPhone.  I’d rather use a 12 button standard phone with T9 input than type on that glass screen.

However, that has almost changed recently.  In the past few days Google has released an iPhone application that is one of the most practical, useful, and downright cool features ever seen on a phone.  It’s the updated Google App that includes voice search.  As you will see in the video below all you have to do is open the app, hold the phone to your ear, and speak your search terms into the phone.  The app will bring up a google search with the desired results.  It will even use the built in GPS to give location specific results!

Something that is fairly exciting to me is that I see other uses for this technology.  If Google can create a voice recognition search app for the iPhone, surely someone will create a speech to text application for those who have issues typing on touch screen phones.  Maybe at that time I’ll get one!  For now, I’m sure this application will end up on other phones in the future, and I’ve had my BlackJack II for less than a year, so I’ll have to wait a while until I get it.  If you are an iPhone user, however, what are you waiting for? Download it now, and try it out!
